The Stattleship Community - 1,000+ Sports Data Nerds by the Numbers

Over the past few months, our Stattleship community has really started to grow. We recently surpassed 1,000 registered Stattleship API users. To give you a sense of what your fellow community members are doing, we're going to break down some API stats for you.

We recently started using an excellent analytics service called Keen.io. They provide API analytics such as number of user signups, API call details, and general event tracking in an easy-to-use dashboard interface. All of these numbers will be since May 9th, when we launched the Keen service.

I decided to extract the data from Keen.io into R and create some ggplot2 charts. We had a major boost in signups, over 25x our normal amount in one day, thanks to a Product Hunt feature and our friends over at STHQ.

It may not come as a surprise that baseball (MLB) is our most popular sport right now, given that it is offseason for the other 3 major sports we offer. The MLB has accounted for over 75% of API calls since May 9th, 2016.

API Calls by Sport (since May 9th, 2016)

We have seen an increase in daily volume of MLB API calls per day since May 9th, 2016.

The games, game_logs and players endpoints are by far the most popular endpoints for the MLB accounting for almost 80% of those API calls.

Lastly, here is a breakdown of the most popular ways that our data enthusiast community is accessing the API. Our R wrapper is by far the most popular way to access the data, followed by Other (which includes generic Curl requests, browser requests, and some others), then the Node wrapper made by one of our awesome community members, followed by the Python wrapper, also created by a community member.

Be sure to join us on our Slack channel, the Fanboat, in order to talk with other sports data enthusiasts, suggest new features, or even contribute by writing your own wrapper or improving upon our existings ones!

Most importantly, if you're building something cool with the API -- a model or an app -- we'd love to hear from you. Give us a shout.

And as a token of our appreciation for your contributions and for being an active Stattleship community member, here is an MLB file from yesterday's games for you to download. This file includes all player game logs from yesterday's games, player salary information, wind speed, and more.
